Tracy Hall, Senior Legal Counsel & Privacy Officer
Tracy is making her second appearance with Pink Tank Group - her first was speaking at our NextGen event in 2013 for University Students speaking about “if I knew then what I know now…”. Fast forward to the present, she is now a Senior Lawyer and Privacy Officer in the competitive oil and gas industry based in Calgary. An industry which only has 13% of females in executive positions. With more than 15 years under her belt in the legal world, Tracy is a big advocate for mentorship and sponsorship in the corporate world. She has helped mentor junior lawyers and articling students and is working with Pink Tank to help educate our readers between the difference of sponsorship and mentoring (coming soon!).
Read on to find more about what she loves most about her career, advice for women in business and how she draws inspiration.
(Pink Tank Group) What is your job title and role?
(Tracy): Senior Legal Counsel and Privacy Officer. I work in an in-house legal department, where I focus on mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, privacy law, and transportation law.
(Pink Tank Group) What do you love most about your career?
(Tracy): I love the diverse, challenging work that comes with law. Every day is different, every day has a new challenge. I love working with subject matter experts of various backgrounds on large projects or large transactions; we work as a team and learn from each other.
(Pink Tank Group) What advice has helped you in your career?
(Tracy): When I was articling, an associate told me "We're human and we make mistakes. It's how you deal with those mistakes that matters." Mistakes are inevitable, and I have found that taking accountability and acting with integrity are key to moving past them.
(Pink Tank Group) What inspires you and motivates you when things get hard?
(Tracy): I find motivation by striving for that sense of personal achievement in a job well done. This means the quality of the legal advice, the work product, and acting with integrity.
(Pink Tank Group) Do you have any advice for the next generation in business?
(Tracy): Understand and define what "success" means to you. You will only feel truly satisfied if you reach your personal definition of success. It's perfectly okay not to want the corner office if that won't make you happy.
(Pink Tank Group) What do you wish women did more of to support each other?
(Tracy): I believe that empowered women support one another; disempowered women see others as comparisons and competition. Surround yourself with other strong, supportive women.
(Pink Tank Group) How do you find inspiration in your career?
(Tracy): I find inspiration in my day to day encounters from the people around me. More often than not, it's a small event, often of no consequence, where you see someone's character that inspires, motivates (and humbles you). It's the cleaning staff who work tremendously hard and without a complaint. It's the junior who worked hard to take on more responsibility on a file. It's the senior leader who showed modesty and not hierarchy. In turn, we can be mindful of how we affect others through our day to day encounters too.
